Welcome to the Winter 2026 edition of Agriview+

Minister's Message
As we step into a new year, I am honoured to once again serve as Saskatchewan’s Minister of Agriculture. I extend my sincere thanks to my predecessor, Daryl Harrison, MLA for Cannington, for his strong advocacy on behalf of Saskatchewan producers and for promoting our agriculture industry worldwide. I also want to recognize the dedication and resilience of Saskatchewan producers, whose hard work made 2025 a record-breaking year with an outstanding 41.9 million metric tonnes of crop production.
With ongoing trade uncertainties with the United States, China and India, 2025 was a challenging year for Saskatchewan producers, and 2026 will likely see continued trade volatility. Our government remains committed to standing up for producers, ensuring they have stability and access to markets as we work together to resolve trade challenges. We will continue to work with our nine international offices to engage governments, investors and buyers to strengthen trade relationships. We continue to lead trade missions, in partnership with industry, to countries where we can help open doors to new partnerships and markets and strengthen existing ones. In fact, Saskatchewan products are already exported to over 160 countries, ensuring food and energy security for billions of people.
We are also investing in research and innovation to help Saskatchewan maintain its competitive position in global markets. Under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, we announced investments in January of $9.7 million to support new crop research projects and $4.5 million to support new livestock and forage-related research projects.
Our government is also focused on improving legislation and regulations for our producers. In November, we introduced the Animal Protection Amendment Act to strengthen and create more transparency and public accountability around animal welfare enforcement. Through consultations held in 2025 with service providers, producer groups and other stakeholders, the Ministry of Agriculture determined that amendments to The Animal Protection Act, 2018 were required to ensure enforcement would be consistent and equitable across the province. These changes reflect our commitment to protecting animal welfare while ensuring fair, consistent enforcement that supports both producers and the public across Saskatchewan.
The protection of Saskatchewan farm land is a priority for our government. This past fall, we announced the formation of a Farm Land Ownership Advisory Committee to consult with the agriculture sector and provide recommendations on strengthening the province’s farm land ownership framework. We also passed regulatory amendments to strengthen and clarify the Farm Land Security Board's powers to enforce regulatory compliance.
As I return to the role of Minister of Agriculture, I look forward to the opportunities ahead. Together with producers, industry partners and communities across Saskatchewan, we will continue building a strong agriculture sector. I’m glad to be back working with our industry partners in 2026 to drive innovation, strengthen our markets and ensure Saskatchewan remains a global leader in agriculture.
Honourable David Marit
Minister of Agriculture
