Using established risk criteria, the review of hundreds of species resulted in the modernization of an Allowed list of species that can be held for personal possession without permitting requirements.
Examples of allowed species
Species that do not require a permit under The Captive Wildlife Regulations, 2021 include:
- Domestic animals such as dogs, cats, horses, poultry and swine;
- Animals raised for the purpose of producing animal products as defined in The Animal Products Act: domestic yaks, alpaca, llamas, ostriches, emus and rheas;
- Llamas when used as guard animals; and
- Hybrid animals greater than the fourth generation from wild stock (i.e. F5, F6, F7 etc.).
