Skills for Success

The Skills for Success (SFS) Framework from the Government of Canada provides people in Canada with everyday skills needed to help you succeed in today’s and tomorrow’s workplace. The SFS Framework focuses on the foundational skills needed to effectively participate in the labour market.

The SFS model identifies nine skills needed to be successful in work, learning and life, and includes: reading, writing, numeracy, digital skills, problem-solving, adaptability, communication, creativity and innovation, and collaboration. The Government of Saskatchewan, funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Skills for Success Program, has published three workbooks to help instructors teach the nine Skills for Success.

1. Skills for Success Workbooks

These free workbooks can be used in Adult Basic Education courses to help develop the employability and life skills of adult learners. The documents include benchmarks, training outcomes and self-assessments for each of the nine skills for success.

The workbooks cover SFS levels 1 and 2:

  • At Level 1, participants may just be beginning to understand the skills. Facilitators or Instructors, can provide guidance and encouragement, outlining with participants how their existing experience and previous knowledge demonstrate their skill strengths, next steps for advancement, and what this means for their goals.
  • At Level 2, participants continue building on the skills. Facilitators or Instructors, can introduce more complex (workplace) scenarios and challenges. At this level, we are working alongside participants while they advance their skills through the activities and reflective practices highlighted in this resource.

In addition, the workbooks include a skills map that provides a visual on how the benchmarks, training outcomes and self-assessment are connected. Each level of each skill has six benchmarks, 12 activities and 12 self-assessments.
