Academic Research Permits

Overview

Under Saskatchewan’s The Wildlife Act, 1998, a permit is required to conduct academic research or to survey wild species for purposes such as development pre-screening, baseline data collection or habitat assessments. A permit is not required for personal, recreational, educational or other non-commercial surveys.

Research permits are a part of the Conservation Standards Program, administered by the Fish and Wildlife Branch of the Ministry of Environment. The Conservation Standards Program provides guidance on conducting reliable and replicable research and ensures high-quality data collection and submissions through active review and quality assurance processes.

All forms and related information pertaining to research permits can be found in the Publications Centre. Subscribe to the mail-out lists for updates to research permits, Saskatchewan Conservation Data Centre lists and ranks and HABISask.

Academic Research Permit Application

This application is intended for use by researchers conducting plant, invertebrate or wildlife research on behalf of agencies or universities. The academic research application covers all other activities regulated under research permits, including bird banding or species detection surveys. A research permit is required regardless of whether an Animal Use Protocol is required for the project.

Submit Wild Species Observations

The Saskatchewan Conservation Data Centre (SKCDC) welcomes data submissions from individuals or groups doing nature-related surveys that don't require an academic research permit. Visit the SKCDC website to learn how to submit your wild species observations.

If you are submitting data through the academic research permit process you do not need to submit it separately to the SKCDC. Data from academic research data loadforms is automatically forwarded to the SKCDC. See the academic research data loadform for more information.
