Humboldt Region Feed Testing Tour

Rikki Wilson, Livestock and Feed Extension Specialist, Humboldt

September 2025

Did you know feed testing is your first line of defence to address potential nutrient deficiencies in your winter feed sources? According to results from the most recent Canadian Cow-Calf Survey, 42.7 per cent of Saskatchewan beef cattle producers test their feed on an annual or regular basis, with an additional 28.7 per cent testing on a non-annual basis. While this number is a positive result and supports the fact that our producers are tracking potential quality issues, there are 28.7 per cent that indicated they do not feed test.

The most common reasons for not testing feed included the perception that the cattle appear healthy (45.1 per cent), lack of confidence in making or implementing feeding plans based on results (15.9 per cent), perceived high cost of testing (12.1 per cent) or logistical challenges of collecting and shipping feed samples, particularly in remote locations (11.5 per cent).

To address some of these challenges, the Humboldt region will be conducting on-farm collection of feed samples this fall, for livestock producers in the Humboldt region. Your regional livestock and feed extension specialist will visit operations that sign up in either October or November to help with feed sample collection, laboratory and test selection and shipping. When results are received, specialists will review the results with producers and help to develop a winter-feeding plan through inventory tracking and one-on-one Cowbytes training sessions.

If your livestock operation falls within a rural municipality on the map below, and you are interested in participating in the feed testing tour, please call the Humboldt Regional Services office to be added to the tour list.
