Indigenous Child Welfare Services and Support

Within Saskatchewan, Indigenous children and families have access to a range of culturally responsive child welfare services and supports. This may involve the delivery of child welfare services by the Ministry of Social Services’ Child and Family Programs, a First Nations Child and Family Services Agency (FNCFS) or an Indigenous Governing Body (IGB) who represents the interests of Indigenous children, youth and families.

Indigenous Governing Body (IGB)

An Indigenous Governing Body, pursuant to the federal Indigenous child welfare legislation, An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families, may decide to exercise jurisdiction in relation to child and family services for members of their Nation. Federal legislation establishes national principles applicable to the provision of child and family services to all Indigenous children.
