Actions to Improve Early Literacy

The Ministry of Education is working with education partners to improve early literacy rates in Saskatchewan through the following actions:

  • A scope and sequence, which outlines the reading skills students will acquire at each grade level, has been developed for Grades 1 to 3 English language arts and Kindergarten curricula.
  • The ministry will provide a provincially supported reading screener, which will help teachers identify students who may require extra support with reading. The ministry will also approve additional screeners that educational organizations may use.
  • The ministry is developing resources to support teachers in using a screener to assess students’ reading skills, as well as to build expertise in reading instruction.
