What You Need To Know Before Signing Up For A Gym Membership

Released on January 21, 2019

The Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority (FCAA) sees an increased number of consumer inquiries about gym memberships this time of year.

Too often, consumers do not ask the right questions before signing up for a gym membership.  These inquiries are usually related to misunderstandings about what is included in the membership package, cancellation processes and unexpected fees for extra programs or services.

Here are some tips to consider:
  • Read the entire contract to ensure you understand the terms.  By law, the contract cannot be for longer than two years.
  • Find out the total cost, including fees for programs and services, and ask questions if you are unsure.
  • You have the right to cancel your contract within seven business days of receiving a written copy and you may also be able to cancel if:
    • you move more than 30 km away from your home gym or one of its other locations;
    • there are material, physical, medical or mental changes supported by your medical practitioner that would make gym participation unreasonable; and
    • there are material changes in the services being provided, or if the facility moves more than 10 km from its former location.
