MLA for Regina Rochdale Laura Ross, on behalf of Education Minister Bronwyn Eyre, and the Regina Catholic School Division joined students and staff to celebrate the grand opening of St. Nicholas School, the newest Catholic elementary school to open in northwest Regina since 1987.
“As we cut the ribbon at St. Nicholas School, I think of the giving spirit St. Nicholas shared with the world. It is that spirit that allows us to answer God’s call to help others,” Regina Catholic School Division Board Chair Donna Ziegler said. “As we welcome a new family of students from St. Angela Merici School, St. Bernadette School, and our youngest new kindergarten students, I pray that this spirit remains. On behalf of the entire Regina Catholic School Division, congratulations to the St. Nicholas School community.”
“We have state-of-the-art facilities to aid in student learning,” St. Nicholas School Principal James Wahl said. “Having been part of the building process since last May, I have tried to explain the schools to others, but I have never been able to do them justice. Only in seeing, can people truly understand how advanced they are. On behalf of the families of St. Nicholas, I say thank you.”
St. Nicholas School shares spaces with Plainsview School as part of the Joint-Use Schools Project. It includes 18 new elementary schools at nine locations throughout the province, all shared between Catholic and public schools.
Each school meets Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver standards and includes innovative efficiencies such as large windows throughout the schools that allow more natural daylight, automated lighting systems that adjust to natural light and that turn on and off based on room occupancy, high-efficient water fixtures and landscaping designs to reduce water consumption, and more locations and storage throughout the schools to recycle.
Since 2007, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed approximately $1.5 billion towards 67 major school capital projects and numerous smaller projects such as portable classrooms and preventative maintenance and renewal.
