Evacuees Encouraged to Check Insurance Coverage

Released on July 10, 2015

The Provincial Government urges people that have been evacuated due to wildfires in northern Saskatchewan to contact their insurance broker, since their living expenses may be covered while displaced from their homes.

“This is a time of stress and uncertainty for those displaced by the evacuations in the North,” said Minister Responsible for SGI CANADA Don McMorris.  “Being separated from their friends, family and neighbours without the comforts of home is a hardship that we’re hoping can be eased a little if they have this mass evacuation coverage, which is a common feature on many home policies.”

During an evacuation order, accommodations, fuel, meals and transportation costs are some of the expenses that may be claimed.  To find out if they have this coverage and the details, customers should speak with their insurance broker. SGI CANADA is not the only insurer that provides this coverage, so customers should contact their broker regardless of which company they insure with.  Customers should keep track of their receipts to submit with their claim, and know that the coverage may be subject to their regular deductible.

“This coverage can allow people to come together in a hotel as a group and have a place to call their own and give them a little breathing space. That’s something that can make a difference to our evacuees,” said McMorris.

Mass evacuation coverage is included on all SGI CANADA personal property policies (Prestige, Home, Mobile, Tenant, Condo, and Agro).  If you insure with SGI CANADA and have been evacuated and can’t reach your broker, SGI CANADA has set up a special line you can call at 1-844-745-2015 for more information.
