$200,000 investment Provides Housing for Women Enrolled in Regina Drug Treatment CourtThe Government of Saskatchewan is providing $200,000 to enable Kate’s Place to remain open in Regina. Kate’s Place provides safe, stable, and supportive housing for women enrolled in the Regina Drug Treatment Court (RDTC) and is operated by the Salvation Army.
“Without this investment, Kate’s Place would have closed its doors at the beginning of the month,” Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant said. “Now, there will be continued support so that women can live substance-free, maintain work or schooling and raise their children. We are thrilled to be part of this program’s future.”
The Ministry of Justice will provide $200,000 this year to pay for operations and programming. That’s on top of a $49,000 grant the ministry provided earlier this year, as well as a $20,000 grant from the Ministry of Social Services.
“The Salvation Army is grateful for the continued confidence shown to us by the Government of Saskatchewan as we provide much needed services to people in need,” area commander for the Salvation Army Major Mike Hoeft said. “The funding of Kate's Place will help the women in our program make positive changes in their lives."
Kate’s Place offers supervised housing for up to 11 women in the process of completing addictions treatment required by the RDTC. Most of these women would otherwise be serving custodial sentences.
The Salvation Army started the program as a two-year test project in 2012 after receiving funding from the federal government. Once the program was in place, the number of women participating in the RDTC went up nearly 40 per cent. Since 2012, four women who were pregnant when they moved into Kate’s Place for treatment later gave birth to healthy, drug-free babies.
The RDTC is a therapeutic court that addresses drug addiction as an underlying cause of criminal activity. It is considered one of the most successful drug treatment courts in Canada.
