About 6,000 elementary school aged children in the province are learning about traffic safety, thanks to SGI and a play by the Saskatchewan Native Theatre Company (SNTC).
The play, titled Imagination Odyssey, teaches kids in Grades 3-8 the basics, such as why it’s important to look both ways before crossing the street and how you should always wear a seatbelt when riding in a vehicle.
“Educating Saskatchewan’s youth about traffic safety is not a new undertaking for SGI, but this is the first time SGI has visited children in elementary schools in such great numbers,” Regina Dewdney MLA Gene Makowsky said on behalf of Minister responsible for SGI Donna Harpauer. “If we can teach kids the importance of traffic safety at a young age, they might carry that lesson with them for life and even influence the adults in their lives.”
SGI commissioned the play, written and performed by the SNTC, specifically to reach kids in this age group.
“The play is interactive and we get lots of audience participation, even from the older kids, which is impressive,” SNTC actor Dakota Hebert said. “People have been really excited to have us in their communities, especially some of the First Nation communities where the kids aren’t exposed to theatre on a regular basis. The kids are happy to see us and ready to listen.”
The play kicked off in Saskatoon on May 13 and wraps up on June 6 in Moose Jaw. It will visit 30 elementary schools in 23 different communities during its month-long Saskatchewan tour.
