Seven families in Lloydminster now have a place of their own to call home, thanks to a partnership between the Government of Saskatchewan and Habitat for Humanity. The province provided $350,000 in funding to the project through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation.
Energy and Resources Minister and Lloydminster MLA Tim McMillan is attending a key presentation this evening on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude. The Forester Place project consists of a seven-unit townhouse condominium. Each unit is approximately 1,078 square feet, and has three bedrooms.
“We are very pleased to help Habitat for Humanity provide safe and affordable housing for partner families in this community,” McMillan said. “All across this province we’re seeing businesses and individuals joining forces with Habitat for Humanity to help families in their communities become homeowners. Initiatives like this one support our Plan for Growth, which strives to ensure there is an adequate supply of safe and affordable housing across Saskatchewan.”
“This is our largest project to date, and doubles the number of families served in Lloydminster since 1999,” Habitat for Humanity Lloydminster Executive Director Vivian Pengelly said. “As a result of continued support from the Government of Saskatchewan, along with our supportive contractors, generous donors and hard-working volunteers, the lives of seven families in this community will change forever.”
In the 2013-14 Budget, the province committed an additional $2 million to help build 40 new Habitat for Humanity homes throughout Saskatchewan. This represents the largest budget increase in funding to Habitat for Humanity in Canada, and brings the government’s commitment to Habitat for Humanity to a total of $7.1 million since March 2009.
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership. Each partner family selected by Habitat for Humanity will contribute a minimum of 500 hours of volunteer labour toward the building of their home and other Habitat homes.
