The Ministry of Social Services has renewed its agreements with the Regina and Saskatoon Police Services to investigate fraud referrals.
"We take fraud very seriously," Social Services Minister June Draude said. "That is why I am pleased to continue these contracts with our local police forces. While the majority of Income Assistance Clients are honest, we need these types of protections in place to both prevent and detect fraud."
Some of the other fraud controls in place within the ministry include case reviews, audits, Do Not Forward mail service, information technology protections, eligibility review workers and interface matching agreements with a variety of agencies such as the Canada Revenue Agency.
In 2011-12, the ministry made 62 referrals for suspected fraudulent client behaviour out of more than 50,000 cases, which is down from 82 in 2010-11 and 89 in 2009-10.
These police agreements, which have been in place since 1997, will cost just over $222,000 in 2012-13 and provide for an officer in both Saskatoon and Regina. While the majority of referrals are handled by the Regina and Saskatoon Police Services, the ministry also refers files for criminal investigation to other municipal police forces and to the RCMP.
