Long term care residents in Redvers are one step closer to a more patient- and family-centred approach to health care following a sod turning ceremony for an addition to the Redvers Health Centre.
When construction is complete in 2013, residents will be transferred from the 24-bed Centennial Haven wing to the addition - two adjoining residences with a total of 24 beds, plus an adult day program.
"Our government is putting patients and families first by building safer, more comfortable buildings that have a more home-like feel for our seniors and others needing long term care," Health Minister Don McMorris said. "We are replacing a total of 13 outdated long term care buildings across the province."
"This is an exciting day for Redvers and outlying communities," Cannington MLA Dan D'Autremont said. "This will be of significant benefit to people in care at this facility. This is money well spent."
"We are committed to providing the best possible patient- and family-centred health care," Sun Country Health Region Interim CEO Marga Cugnet said. "It's great to see such commitment by the province, the health region, the Redvers Health Foundation, health providers and the community to work together for a better, safer environment for long term care."
"We have been actively pursuing this project since we built the acute care unit in 1996," Redvers Health Foundation Chairperson Kim Carlson said. "The old facility did not meet the needs and quality of care for the residents. The municipal bodies involved in the project are happy it is finally a go."
The existing nursing home wing, built in 1967, will be converted for offices, meeting rooms and storage.
In February, the provincial government reduced the local funding share for health facility projects from 35 per cent to 20 per cent, in recognition of revenue constraints that municipalities face.
