Radville-area residents today celebrated progress toward a more patient- and family-centred approach to health care with a sod turning ceremony at the construction site for a new facility to replace the Radville Marian Health Centre.
"Our government is putting patients and families first by replacing aging health facilities with safer, more comfortable buildings and a more home-like feel for seniors and others needing long-term care," Health Minister Don McMorris said. "We are replacing a total of 13 outdated long-term care buildings across the province."
When complete in 2013, the new facility on the west edge of town will replace Marian Health Centre's original 1948 building and its 1951 nursing home addition.
"Where there is strong community support and a shared vision of the future, great things can happen," Estevan MLA Doreen Eagles said. "It's exciting to see this project getting ready for construction."
"We are committed to providing the best possible patient- and family-centred health care," Sun Country Health Region Interim CEO Marga Cugnet said. "Seeing the commitment of the province, the health region, the Radville Marian Health Centre Board of Directors, health providers and the community to work together for a better, safer health facility is thrilling."
"The residents, businesses, civic leaders and service organizations in the Radville area showed support for facility improvements long before this project kicked off, and their support only got stronger as plans for a new building took shape," Chair of the Radville Marian Health Centre Board of Directors, and councillor for the RM of Surprise Valley No. 9 Murray Hlavka said. "The board is excited to see this initial phase of construction going ahead."
In February, the provincial government reduced the local funding share for health facility projects from 35 per cent to 20 per cent, in recognition of revenue constraints that municipalities face.
