MORE AFFORDABLE HOUSING AVAILABLE FOR REGINA FAMILIES

Released on January 24, 2011

More affordable housing is available for low and moderate-income families thanks to the opening of Maple Leaf Place, a 39-unit apartment building and 14 townhouses located in Regina's Heritage neighbourhood. The province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), provided $11.3 million in project funding, with the City of Regina contributing $530,000.

"Our government is pleased to work with the City of Regina to help more families find a place to call home," Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude said. "This development has transformed the Heritage neighbourhood into a mix of attractive, affordable and energy-efficient homes and apartments and revitalized this community. Most importantly, this initiative is providing a safe place to live and raise a family, where people are confident in their future."

"The Maple Leaf Estates housing project is another great example of what can be accomplished when we work together to help families realize the dream of an affordable home," Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco said. "This project fits well with City Council's vision of a vibrant, inclusive, attractive, sustainable community where people live in harmony and thrive in opportunity."

Maple Leaf Estates - Phase I, a 29-unit homeowner townhouse complex was constructed by SHC in 2007-08. Maple Leaf Estates - Phase II consists of two distinct components: an apartment building with 39 units (37 two-bedroom and two five-bedroom units), and 14 townhouses (13 three-bedroom and one accessible two-bedroom). Maple Leaf Estates sits on approximately four acres of land formerly occupied by St. Joseph School, adjacent to the General Hospital and Maple Leaf Park.

All 82 units in both phases have been built to EnergyStar high efficiency ratings (formerly known as R2000 standards), and are certified as such. They are constructed with quality, moderately priced materials for durability and affordability. Residents will benefit from reduced energy costs, as well as energy efficient design features such as R35 walls and R70 attic space, low flow toilets, solar-assisted domestic hot water and a boiler system that can accommodate future neighbourhood heating plans. The average unit is approximately 1,000 square feet with the townhouses having an unfinished basement. The apartment rents are set at the low end of market rates starting at approximately $900 per month.

The rental units will be managed by the Regina Housing Authority, which manages more than 2,900 units on SHC's behalf in Regina.
