People with intellectual disabilities in Kipling and area have greater access to residential programs and services following the grand opening today of a six-space group home in that community.
In partnership with Kipling Industries Inc., the project is part of the province's four-year, $76.9 million commitment to eliminate the waitlist of 440 Saskatchewan people with intellectual disabilities who require residential, day and specialized programs that meet their assessed needs.
"The province is pleased to have partnered with Kipling Industries Inc. on this important initiative on behalf of people with intellectual disabilities in Kipling and area," Moosomin MLA Don Toth said on behalf of Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer. "We applaud the accomplishments of Kipling Industries in developing quality programs and services that respond to the needs of people with disabilities in their community."
The six-space group home was made possible by a one-time capital grant from the province of $100,000 to Kipling Industries to assist in the purchase and renovation of an existing home in the town of Kipling. The province is also providing more than $177,000 in annual operating funding to the Kipling group home. Further renovation of the home is also planned, with two more spaces for people with intellectual disabilities expected to be constructed in the home in the coming year.
"With the financial support of the province, we are pleased to provide more residential spaces for people with intellectual disabilities in our community," Kipling Industries Inc. Executive Director Joanne Weir said. "As part of our mandate to enhance the lives of people with intellectual disabilities in Kipling and surrounding area, Kipling Industries also operates a 12-space day program, as well as a supported living program that currently helps six people with intellectual disabilities to remain in their homes."
The province-wide, $76.9 million waitlist initiative, announced by Harpauer in October 2008, is being phased in over four years and includes $27.8 million in funding for capital projects. This investment is the largest in Saskatchewan history to support people with intellectual disabilities.
By the end of this fiscal year, projects will be underway to serve 264 Saskatchewan people with intellectual disabilities - 60 per cent of the waitlist. The government is on pace to eliminate the 440 waitlist by 2013.
