Eleven partners from public, private, and non-profit organizations were in La Ronge today to sign an agreement committing $12.7 million over the next five years for training and apprenticeship opportunities in northern Saskatchewan.
This commitment is part of the fourth phase of the Multi-Party Training Plan (MPTP). MPTP addresses the skill barriers to northerners qualifying for jobs, combines training resources, and links training directly to the labour force demands of the mineral sector. More than 100 mining-related training opportunities are provided each year, as well as scholarships and support for apprentices and northern contractors.
"The provincial government is committed to meeting the post-secondary education and skills training needs of Northern communities through partnership initiatives such as the multi-party training plan," Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris said. "Providing opportunities for apprentices and contractors is key to building Saskatchewan's future."
Of the $12.7 million, the Ministry of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour is committing $3 million over the five-year term, the Ministry of First Nations and Métis Relations is committing $250,000, the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission $250,000, and Northlands College $2 million. Woodland Cree Enterprises Inc., Prince Albert Grand Council, Meadow Lake Tribal Council, and Gabriel Dumont Institute Training and Employment Services representing First Nations and Métis agencies are committing $781,250. Cameco Corporation, AREVA Resources Canada Inc., and Claude Resources Inc. representing the mining industry are committing $6.5 million.
