Last Mountain-Touchwood MLA Glen Hart on behalf of Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer, today presented a Spirit Award for Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) to the Community Family Resource Centre Inc. of Lestock.
"The province applauds the Community Family Resource Centre for developing an impressive range of quality programs and services that respond to the needs of children, youth and families," Hart said. "The centre has been a valuable partner of the Ministry of Social Services for nearly 35 years, and is a worthy recipient of this award for its ongoing service to the people of Lestock and surrounding communities."
The Spirit Award honours CBOs that deliver programs and services on behalf of the Ministry of Social Services or its agency, the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. The award celebrates the contributions of these human-services CBOs to the well-being of Saskatchewan people. The CBOs that deliver these services are all non-profit organizations operated by volunteer boards which share the common goal of improving the lives of people and families in their communities.
CBOs that received funding within the past two years from the ministry or the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation are eligible for the award. Funded CBOs include those that support children, youth and families who are facing challenges or are in crisis, those that provide services and supports for people with disabilities, as well as housing authorities that deliver housing programs and services for lower-income people.
The Community Family Resource Centre has been serving the people of Lestock and area since 1975, and is the Spirit Award recipient in the children, youth and families category. Programs and services that are currently delivered by this non-profit organization include after-school programs for children and youth, parent support and job search services, healthy lifestyle and cross-cultural programs, and literacy programs, including the "Every Child Ready To Read" program.
This year's other recipients of a Spirit Award for Community-Based Organizations are:
• Saskatchewan Abilities Council, Saskatoon (people with disabilities category); and
• Oliver Place, Saskatoon (housing category).
Hart presented representatives of the Community Family Resource Centre with their Spirit Award, including a cheque for $1,000 that will go toward the education or training of the organization's staff.
