Up 16,288 People in Past Year; Up 3,941 in Past Quarter
The number of people living in Saskatchewan grew by nearly 4,000 in the second quarter of 2008 and by more than 16,000 in the past year, according to the latest figures released today by Statistics Canada. There were 1,015,985 people living in Saskatchewan as of July 1, 2008.
Premier Brad Wall said the consistent and sustained population is one more sign of the province's economic transformation.
"Saskatchewan today is a very different place than it was just a few short years ago when more people were moving out," Wall said. "Today, there is excitement and opportunities and optimism, and that is attracting people from all over Canada."
Wall said the flow of Saskatchewan people to Alberta has been turned around, as more people are now moving from Alberta to Saskatchewan.
The province is now setting its sights on attracting Ontario workers, who have been hard hit lately by the downturn in that province's economy.
Wall is in Toronto today at the National Job Fair with more than 50 Saskatchewan employers hoping to attract new employees to Saskatchewan. He noted that in the past year, 3,873 Ontario residents have moved to Saskatchewan.
"Saskatchewan's a great place to make a living, but it's an even better place to make a life," Wall said. "We're here telling Ontario people not just about the great opportunities in our province, but about the great quality of life."
NOTE TO EDITORS: Premier Wall will be available for comment following the Empire Club speech on Monday, Sept. 29, approximately 1 p.m., Royal York Hotel - Upper Canada Room, 18th Floor, 100 Front Street West, Toronto, Ontario.
