Released on March 28, 2008
The integrated Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit created to address child sexual exploitation over the Internet will see its funding increased to $1.12 million annually.
Funding for the four existing police officers dedicated to the ICE Unit would have expired March 2008 for the RCMP, Saskatoon and Regina police services. Funding announced as part of the 2008-09 provincial budget will see these positions funded in a permanent and sustainable matter, with the addition of seven new police officer positions that also includes one from the Prince Albert Police Service. This funding is designed to be sustainable and will make the ICE Unit a fixture in the range of policing services available to Saskatchewan residents.
"Saskatchewan citizens will not tolerate the exploitation of our children by Internet predators," Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister Darryl Hickie said. "The funding provided to the ICE Unit means we will have 11 police officers in major centres across Saskatchewan dedicated to this important work."
The ICE Unit focuses on investigation skills, technical resources and criminal intelligence to investigate individuals suspected of preying on young victims through the Internet.
"Exploiting children through the Internet has become a serious issue world-wide," Prince Albert Police Service Deputy Chief Troy Cooper said. "We are pleased that the Prince Albert Police Service is now positioned with other Saskatchewan police services to help stop these predators."
The 11 police officer positions funded for the ICE Unit is part of the 30 police officer positions announced in the provincial budget last week.
