More businesses signed on to a First Nations and Métis Employment Development agreement today in Nipawin. They join other partners in this historic agreement that will see more opportunities for Aboriginal people in the Nipawin area.
In June of 2006, Nipawin made a commitment to achieve a more representative workforce. They came together to sign an Aboriginal Employment Development partnership with the Government of Saskatchewan and began a community-driven process that included the First Nations and Métis communities. This signing was the first of its kind in Saskatchewan and Canada.
On February 5, 2008, the Royal Bank of Canada, Nipawin Branch joined the initiative bringing the total number of partners to 18. Today, they are joined by nine new partners including A & W, Harolds Sports & Shoes, Harpers Pharmacy, The Nipawin Journal, Nipawin Oasis Community Centre Co-operative, Northern Green Resort, OK Tire, RONA/Pinecrest Lumber Ltd., and Spectrum Signs & Printing. This community driven process now includes 27 partners, all sharing a common vision of achieving a more representative workforce in their area.
"The community of Nipawin serves as a model for other communities, and demonstrates that by pulling together we can ensure that all residents of Saskatchewan share in the prosperity of this province," First Nations and Métis Relations Minister June Draude said. "Today is a day of celebration, as our new partner joins us in the quest to achieve that vision."
"The Nipawin Representative Workforce Partnership represents a formal recognition of the proportionate balance that exists in the workforce between the number of Aboriginal people in our community and the number in the workforce," Nipawin Mayor Glen Day said. "It is a serious attempt to address the issue and provide opportunities to make real, positive changes in our community. As a partner, the Town of Nipawin is pleased to have these additional community businesses and organizations joining all our partners in promoting and fostering the principles of the Representative Workforce Strategy in Nipawin."
The Ministry of First Nations and Métis Relations is working with its partners to meet provincial labour market needs through work place preparation. By building links to the First Nations and Métis workforce, these partnerships strive to ensure representation at all occupational levels. This participation is integral to Saskatchewan's future success.
