ECONOMIC DEVELOPERS SHARPEN LEADERSHIP SKILLS

Released on June 11, 2008

Saskatchewan is rolling out its plan to build high performing regions by training economic developers so that they can implement successful regional programs and cash in on the current economic momentum.

The leadership development training sponsored by the Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation and Saskatchewan Economic Development Association (SEDA) will be held on June 16-17, in Saskatoon. It will be presented by The Pacific Institute and will focus on building leadership for high performing regions in Saskatchewan. This is a follow up to an earlier training session presented on May 21-22.

"Saskatchewan is not a single economy, but rather a collection of regional economies with differing assets and liabilities, strengths and weaknesses," Enterprise and Innovation Minister Lyle Stewart said. "Our government's plan is to develop people to lead high performing regions in order to sustain our economic growth and competitive advantages at the regional level."

"Managing the ability to partner and develop close relationships is key to catalyzing the capabilities inherent to Saskatchewan communities, regions and businesses," SEDA president John Parker said. "The vision of high performing regional economies competing in a global marketplace is a common goal that requires progressive concepts, best practices, cutting-edge ideas, models and tools. LEADERSHIP is the engine that will pull them together and put them into play."

The Investment in Leadership Excellence will train participants on three areas: Engaging hearts and minds of individuals as human beings and employees first, and organizations and communities second; Involve people to build excitement and enthusiasm for self-directed change and expansive growth; and provide proven scientific tools to implement change in areas where individuals possess the passion but lack the skills or belief in their ability to change.
