A new Internet course is being piloted by the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC) and the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST) to help certify carpenters. SATCC is accepting applications now. Courses start September 1, 2008 and run continuously thereafter.
Eligible candidates who have been working in the carpenter trade but have not followed the apprenticeship training route, which combines on-the-job training with technical instruction, can now upgrade their knowledge over the Internet before challenging the interprovincial exam. Previously, carpenter upgrading programs were available only in a classroom-based model.
"With a shortage of skilled workers in our booming economy, industry asked us to consider online training," SATCC board chair Paul McLellan said. "We are excited to offer this new option so that trades people don't have to leave their jobs or homes to attend the standard seven week upgrading program at an institution. This pilot program will enable more people to review their essential skills and then challenge for their journeyperson status. With this added flexibility, we will be able to certify more skilled tradespersons."
This new online option allows eligible candidates to work through the program at their convenience within a 26-week period. To be eligible, tradespersons must have a minimum of six years of varied trade experience in the carpenter trade as assessed and verified by the SATCC. Both the online and the classroom upgrading courses cover all mandatory topics such as occupational skills, framing, exterior finishing and interior finishing.
According to McLellan, if this pilot goes well, online versions may also be developed for other trades experiencing skills shortages.
