Saskatchewan's mining industry is on a roll, and Energy and Resources Minister Bill Boyd is taking that message to Vancouver at one of the industry's biggest annual events.
The Mineral Exploration Roundup, January 28-31, is western Canada's largest technical mineral exploration conference. Boyd will attend part of the conference and host a roundtable luncheon Wednesday for investors and exploration companies with interests in the province.
"Last week Premier Wall and I took the message of our incredible oil and gas potential to investors in Calgary," Boyd said. "The success story of our mineral riches is no less compelling.
"The roundup provides an excellent forum for us to tell that impressive story, to connect with established companies and newcomers to Saskatchewan mining, to hear their views on the industry and, of course, to promote our province to investors."
Saskatchewan's mineral sales are expected to reach a record $4.6 billion for 2007, compared to just under $3.2 billion for 2006. Exploration expenditures for 2007 should exceed $277 million.
There are a record 18.3 million hectares of active and pending mineral dispositions in Saskatchewan, up from 13.5 million hectares at the beginning of 2006.
"Investors are looking at our province's rich, diverse and untapped mineral potential and matching their interest with significant exploration dollars," Boyd said.
Saskatchewan companies have committed approximately $3.5 billion to expand the capacity of existing potash mines and a feasibility study is underway on a new mine, which if it is developed, will be the first in decades.
Several uranium deposits in northern Saskatchewan are either under development or are the subject of feasibility studies. A $50 million meta-kaolin plant is expected to be operational this year together with a new gold mine and there is a potential for a diamond mine in the Fort à la Corne area.
