MINISTER OF JUSTICE CONGRATULATES FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ON PASSAGE OF BILL C-2

Released on February 28, 2008

Justice Minister and Attorney General Don Morgan today expressed his congratulations to the federal government on the passage of Bill C-2, the Tackling Violent Crime Act.

"Our government made a commitment to the people of this province to get tough on crime and protect children," Morgan said. "The passage of this federal Bill will help us to keep that promise and to ensure that all Saskatchewan residents can raise their families in safe, secure communities."

The Tackling Violent Crime Act creates two new firearm offences, provides escalating mandatory sentences for serious firearm offences and reverses the onus on those seeking bail when accused of serious firearm offences. It introduces a new process for the detection and investigation of drug-impaired driving and increases the penalties for impaired driving. It also makes it easier to have someone declared a dangerous offender and raises the age of consent for sexual activity from 14 to 16 years.

"We have been supportive of the federal government's efforts to pass this Bill and we now look forward to working with federal officials toward implementation of the various provisions," Morgan said.

The Tackling Violent Crime Act was introduced in the House of Commons on October 18, 2007, and was passed by the Senate on February 28, 2008. The Act will come into force on proclamation.
