Some of Canada's premier high school junior and senior baseball players will be in Kindersley next August for the 2009 Baseball Canada Cup, and the province will be there supporting them.
The 2009 Baseball Canada Cup will bring 10 provincial high school all-star baseball teams to Kindersley for the August 4-11 tournament. There will be approximately 200 athletes, 40 coaches and a number of officials at the tournament. Invitations to try-out for the Baseball Canada Junior National Team are based on the players' performance at this tournament.
The province is giving Kindersley Minor Ball $75,000, which is in addition to the $56,149 raised by Kindersley Minor Ball to help cover the cost of putting on the 2009 Baseball Canada Cup.
"Supporting this kind of national event strengthens Saskatchewan's sports sector and raises our national profile," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "I would like to recognize the officials, coaches and volunteers whose dedication and support make events such as this possible. Their commitment helps build the quality of life we all enjoy."
"The 2009 Canada Cup Committee, together with Kindersley Minor Ball, would like to thank the province for its generous donation and support for this national tournament," Kindersley Minor Ball president Michelle German said. "The committee and community of Kindersley are proud to be hosting an event of this calibre. We look forward to welcoming many baseball fans from across the country."
The $75,000 going to Kindersley to support the 2009 Baseball Canada Cup is another example of government's pledge in the last budget to increase support for event hosting.
