FUNDING RELEASED TO REVITALIZE HUDSON BAY, CARROT RIVER, AIR RONGE AND BIG RIVER

Released on December 9, 2008

Four Saskatchewan communities looking to reverse the negative impact of the economic downturn in the forest sector today received $4.8 million in government funding to strengthen economic opportunities and revitalize their communities.

The Town of Hudson Bay was awarded $3.26 million for upgrades to their water supply and refurbish a warehouse for future industries. Carrot River received $1.16 million to build an access road to a peat moss plant and fund a feasibility study for a regional park and an industrial park. The Village of Air Ronge, through the Woodlands and Waterways Regional Development Corporation, received $310,000 toward a regional information centre. The Town of Big River will receive $55,000 for asset mapping and putting together a community development plan.

"Our communities have shown resilience by putting forward proposals to develop alternative economic activities for their towns," Enterprise and Innovation Minister Lyle Stewart said. "We intend to fully support these revitalization initiatives in these communities and make them more attractive to existing businesses and new investors."

Saskatchewan Rivers MLA Nadine Wilson attended the Big River announcement on behalf of Minister Stewart.

"The Minister and I urge these communities to focus on economic diversity as they draft their development plans," Wilson said. "We want to assist local efforts to revitalize and strengthen communities."

Carrot River Valley MLA Fred Bradshaw joined Minister Stewart in Carrot River and Hudson Bay for the announcements.

"We recognize these communities are struggling, and we are committed to providing them with the resources they need to ensure they share in Saskatchewan's new found prosperity," Bradshaw said.

Earlier this year, the federal government announced a $1 billion Community Development Trust Fund intended to help support activities that strengthen economic opportunities for communities negatively affected by global financial and commodity market disruption.

Saskatchewan's share of the fund is $36.4 million over three years. The forestry sector and its communities are being targeted for priority spending in Saskatchewan given the historic downturn that has occurred in this sector. Throughout May and June 2008, the Province conducted needs consultations in the communities of Prince Albert, Big River, Meadow Lake, Hudson Bay, Carrot River and La Ronge.

Funding requests from other communities are still being finalized and further details will be provided once this process is complete. The application and guidelines are posted on the Ministry's website www.ei.gov.sk.ca/.
