A first-hand account of how a workplace injury has affected one man’s life will be the focus of this year’s provincial launch of North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week in Regina.
Curtis Weber, who lost an arm and a leg in an on-the-job accident that happened when he was just 17-years-old, will be the guest speaker at the annual NAOSH luncheon, May 7 at the Conexus Arts Centre, Doris Knight Hall, Regina.
Mr. Weber will talk about the accident and its aftermath in hopes his story will inspire others to commit to workplace safety.
“Through education and enforcement we have reduced the number of injuries in Saskatchewan workplaces by 18 per cent since 2002,” Labour Minister David Forbes said. “We are continuing to work with employers, workers and specifically our young people to further reduce the number of injuries that occur each year and to ensure the Saskatchewan people have safe and healthy workplaces.”
The goal of NAOSH week is to focus the attention of employers, employees, and the general public on the importance of preventing injury and illness in the workplace, at home and in the community.
NAOSH partners in Saskatchewan include the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Government of Canada, Saskatchewan Labour, Saskatchewan Safety Council, Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board, Saskatchewan Safety Associations, Saskatchewan Federation of Labour, Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations, Farm Credit Canada and SaskTel.
NAOSH week is observed in Canada, the United States and Mexico. More information about NAOSH week can be found at http://www.naosh.org.
