The Government of Saskatchewan plans to invest over $7 million to help the province’s beef processing sector comply with, and adapt to, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) enhanced feed ban, which takes effect on July 12, 2007. The feed ban was developed to help accelerate the elimination of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) from Canada’s cattle herd.
The Canada-Saskatchewan Specified Risk Material (SRM) Management Program, developed by Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food in consultation with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, will provide up to 50 per cent of project funding (subject to an individual cap). Payments may be pro-rated to ensure program funding is equitably distributed and fully utilized. The program is intended to help abattoirs, processors and other industry stakeholders partially offset the cost of infrastructure development necessary to comply with the new CFIA regulations.
“The Canada-Saskatchewan SRM Management Program will help our beef processing industry to segregate specified risk material and dispose of it in an appropriate manner,” Agriculture and Food Minister Mark Wartman said. “Our investment will help put the necessary infrastructure in place to meet the new regulations.”
The province’s $7.3 million commitment to the program will be supplemented by $11 million in federal funding under a 60:40 federal-provincial cost-sharing agreement. The new program will assist Saskatchewan’s cattle industry in removing all SRM – tissues that can harbour BSE – from animal feeds, pet foods and fertilizers. It will also help the industry handle and dispose of Specified Risk Materials in the manner prescribed by the federal regulations. The effective implementation of Canada’s enhanced feed ban will help to ensure the protection of animal health, increase consumer confidence, and strengthen trade opportunities for Canadian cattle and beef.
Program applications will be finalized shortly and posted on the Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food website at www.agr.gov.sk.ca. Information and applications will also be available from program administrators at 306-787-4325 or 306-787-5947.
