Saskatchewan Housing Corporation announced today that it is renewing and improving the Saskatchewan Home Energy Improvement Program (SHEIP) and extending its availability until March 31, 2011.
"We are very pleased to enhance and extend the Saskatchewan Home Energy Improvement Program," Community Resources Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Kevin Yates said. "Since SHEIP's beginning in 2006, and for the next four years, the province will be investing $22 million to help approximately 8,000 low- and moderate-income homeowners lower their future heating costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Our goal is to build upon the strengths that already make Saskatchewan the best place to live, work and raise a family and to advance Saskatchewan as a leader in a green and prosperous economy."
SHEIP provides top-up grants to qualifying low- and moderate-income homeowners and rental property owners housing low-income tenants to make energy efficiency and conservation upgrades to their homes.
SHEIP will offer top-up grants to the Saskatchewan EnerGuide for Houses Program and the federal ecoENERGY Retrofit Initiative. When combined, the maximum grant level is up to $4,000 ($4,700 in the north) for households with dependants that have a gross household income of up to $52,000 in southern Saskatchewan ($62,000 in the north). The level of assistance varies by income, type of dwelling and family composition. For further information about SHEIP, applicants need to call 1-866-388-8433 or the housing authority in Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw and Prince Albert.
Heating and ventilation system upgrades, insulation, air sealing and draft proofing were previously covered under SHEIP. New eligible improvements include; air conditioning, water heating systems, such as tankless hot water heaters; solar hot water systems; grey water heat recovery; and conservation recommendations, such as low-flow or dual flush toilets.
Upon approval from Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, qualifying applicants must book a home evaluation with one of the Saskatchewan service organizations:
