The Province of Saskatchewan unveiled the first of two new King Air B200 aircraft today, part of a $12 million investment that will help Saskatchewan Air Ambulance meet rising demand for emergency air transportation well into the future.
"Updating of our Air Ambulance fleet will help to ensure that people across the province continue to have safe, rapid access to specialized medical care," Health Minister Len Taylor said. "This essential service remains a top priority of our government, and an important part of our plan to ensure emergency medical services are available to all Saskatchewan families."
Saskatchewan Air Ambulance, also known as Lifeguard, is based at Saskatoon's John G. Diefenbaker International Airport. Collectively, the service's three aircraft make more than 1,300 trips and fly nearly 1,000,000 kilometres annually.
"Government is committed to maintaining and improving the service, which has operated for over 60 years and was the first non-military air ambulance service in the world," Taylor said. "Lifeguard is a vital part of our health care system, and benefits patients and their families every day. This investment allows it to continue providing them with the best possible critical care services."
The service has had King Air B200 aircraft as part of its fleet since 2001, and experience has proven it to a reliable and capable aircraft. The purchase standardizes Lifeguard's fleet, enabling the service to more easily conduct routine maintenance, order replacement parts, and train pilots and ground crew.
"Lifeguard's clinical operations are a valuable resource for the entire province," Saskatoon Health Region president and CEO Maura Davies said. "Ensuring we have the capacity to continue emergency air transportation is vital to Saskatchewan's health care system, and we're pleased our air medical staff will be able to continue Lifeguard's outstanding tradition."
Lifeguard is a provincial program funded and administered by Saskatchewan Health. Saskatchewan Property Management supplies aviation services and Saskatoon Health Region provides air medical staff. The service transports patients from remote communities to larger centres within Saskatchewan, and also takes patients outside of the province if they require highly specialized treatment not available in Saskatchewan.
Once both new aircraft are in service, Lifeguard will retire its oldest plane, a 1990 Piper Cheyenne III-A. One of its older King Air B200s will be refitted and reassigned to Executive Air Services, leaving Lifeguard with three newer aircraft.
