The ski hill at Blackstrap Provincial Park will open for business and be ready for skiers and snowboarders on Friday, February 9.
“I am pleased that we were able to get the ski hill up and running in such a short timeframe, especially since February is usually considered the beginning of peak skiing,” Environment Minister John Nilson said. “Offering high-quality outdoor recreational activities in our provincial parks makes life better for today’s Saskatchewan families and helps build an even better future here for our young people.”
Two new lifts have been added to the hill at Blackstrap. A carpet lift has been installed in front of the day lodge to service the lower portions of the hill for the beginners’ ski lessons. For the snowboarders and more proficient skiers, a temporary handle tow has been installed along the existing T-bar line to service both the snowboard park and the upper reaches of the beginner and intermediate slopes. The T-Bar and Chairlift will not be operational until specialized replacement parts can be manufactured later in 2007.
“We are happy to be open and offer recreation facilities for everyone to play outside this winter,” contract operator Rick Schwinghammer said. “We have already booked several school and youth groups for their outdoor education days. There is a lot of excitement in the neighbouring urban and rural communities with the opening of the ski hill.”
The total investment to open the hill this year included $373,000 for the operating agreement; $435,000 for purchasing the two lifts and the snow groomer; and $55,000 for rental of buildings, equipment and associated operating expenses.
Blackstrap ski hill has considerable future recreational potential based on its characteristics and its close proximity to Saskatoon. The department will continue to work on the development of long-term options for the revitalization of this provincial park ski hill.
