PROVINCIAL YOUTH REMAND UNIT OPEN IN PRINCE ALBERT

Released on September 25, 2006

Corrections and Public Safety Minister Warren McCall officially opened the new remand unit of the Prince Albert Youth Facility today.

The closed-custody unit can house up to 12 youth awaiting sentencing and creates four new permanent positions for provincial remand staff. It was built as an addition to the existing youth facility, which provides open custody services for 14 male youth.

"The new unit follows a set of principles consistent with the federal Youth Criminal Justice Act, which calls for new approaches to assessment, supervision, treatment and custody," McCall said.

"We are committed to ensuring that the individuals here in closed custody have the opportunity to participate in the programs and services that help produce more positive outcomes for themselves, their families and their communities."

The unit has been designed to include a room which provides a secure, confidential space for the youth in custody to meet with their families or with legal counsel.

Delivery of educational instruction to replace classroom attendance is currently being negotiated with two local school divisions. Other services include a scheduled exercise program and an art program.

Construction on the unit began in August 2005 and it received its first resident in mid-May 2006.

Saskatchewan Corrections and Public Safety is responsible for keeping Saskatchewan individuals and communities safe. It achieves this aim by working with governments and communities to enhance security and public safety through effective adult and youth corrections services, emergency planning, training, licensing and inspection services.
