Saskatchewan troops flew the provincial flag over Afghani soil as part of their centennial celebrations and now that same flag will fly over Saskatchewan soil when the province officially celebrates its 100th anniversary on September 4th, 2005.
Veterans, military personnel and cadets gathered as the flag was raised over the Saskatchewan Legislative Building to commemorate the province's centennial, the Year of the Veteran and the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. The Second World War ended on September 2nd, 1945, with the formal surrender of Japan aboard the U.S. battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay.
"Saskatchewan men and women have a long and proud tradition of serving their country and this flag is a symbol of the sacrifices that they have made so that we can enjoy the freedom that we experience today," Saskatchewan Centennial 2005 Chair and Moose Jaw North MLA Glenn Hagel said. "The Saskatchewan personnel stationed at Camp Julien embody the spirit of the centennial and we are proud to fly this flag in honour of them, as well as all veterans, military personnel and peacekeepers."
In May, Saskatchewan troops stationed at Camp Julien celebrated their home province's 100th birthday with a special centennial celebration. On May 22nd, the Saskatchewan flag flew over a monument commemorating the lives of seven Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan. The Saskatchewan troops, led by Sergeant Michael Wiggins of Moose Jaw, then presented the flag to the province as a gift to Saskatchewan people.
"This flag reminds all of us of the sacrifices service people and their families have made over the past 100 years and continue to make to this day," Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Property Management Deb Higgins said.
"Almost every Canadian Forces contingent to foreign lands contains personnel from this province," Honorary Colonel of 16 Saskatchewan Service Battalion Kenneth Garbutt said. "All of us who have served and those who continue to serve are proud Canadians and our home province of Saskatchewan is always foremost in our mind, wherever we may be."
The provincial flag will be flown over the Saskatchewan Legislature this long weekend, as the province celebrates its official 100th birthday.
