Premier Lorne Calvert, on behalf of the people of Saskatchewan, has extended Saskatchewan's condolences and has offered assistance for victims of the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
"This devastation is of immense proportion affecting millions of our American neighbours," Calvert said. "We want those directly or indirectly affected to know that our thoughts and prayers are with them as they work to overcome this catastrophic tragedy."
Premier Calvert has written to President George W. Bush to offer Saskatchewan's support as may be requested by the United States.
"Saskatchewan is ready to help," Calvert said. "In past disasters, we have contributed in many ways including through providing equipment or expertise required as rebuilding takes place. Saskatchewan has many people experienced in emergency responses and disasters – including people experienced in construction, heavy equipment, public health, technology and water sciences. We will respond as we can should needs be identified by the United States."
People in Saskatchewan who would like to donate to relief efforts may wish to contact the Canadian Red Cross at 1-800-418-1111 or www.redcross.ca. Foreign Affairs Canada is in touch with Canadians in the affected areas and has information available at 1-800-267-6788.
