W.P. BATE COMMUNITY SCHOOL TO BE RELOCATED

Released on November 29, 2005

Public School Division residents and visitors gathered to celebrate the building of a new W.P. Bate Community School at a new location in Saskatoon with a renewal ceremony today.

After public consultations held by the School Division and the City of Saskatoon, the decision was made to build a new school with enhanced features on 18th Street in Meadowgreen Park.

"When we upgrade or build new schools, we are investing in students and in the future of Saskatchewan," Regional Director Crandall Hrynkiw said on behalf of Learning Minister Andrew Thomson. "The new W.P. Bate School demonstrates our commitment to all Saskatchewan students and will help the youth of Saskatoon to reach their potential."

The replacement of W.P. Bate School was approved as a major capital project in September 2003 to meet the long-term educational needs of the community. Based on a facility audit of the existing school, the Department approved the replacement of the school rather than renovating the existing school. The enhancements in the new school will include a Pre-kindergarten, Kindergarten, large gymnasium, performing arts area, computer and science classrooms, staff room and an administration area.

Saskatchewan Learning is providing $2.3 million in project funding over three years. Department funding began with $55,000 for planning in 2004 with an additional $1.1 million provided in 2005-06 and $1.1 million in 2006-07. The total estimated cost for the project is $4.1 million.

This is a joint use project between the school division and City of Saskatoon including a partnership for construction of the new facility. This partnership will enable the Meadowgreen Community Association to use the gymnasium for its activities. The construction began at the new site earlier this month and is anticipated to be complete by September 2006. The old school, located on Ottawa Avenue South, will be demolished and the property will be turned over to the City in return for the property on which the new school is being constructed.
