SASKATCHEWAN CONGRATULATES CORNER GAS

The province congratulates the comedy series Corner Gas on winning a Writers Guild of Canada award.

Corner Gas writers Brent Butt, Paul Mather and Mark Farrell won the award for best screenplay for the Corner Gas episode "Comedy Night".

"Saskatchewan's film and video industry is among the best in Canada, and we congratulate Corner Gas on receiving this award," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joan Beatty said. "Saskatchewan's productions are enjoyed by millions from coast to coast, and it's great to see Corner Gas get this kind of recognition.

Corner Gas has attracted up to two million viewers per week on CTV, a major achievement for a Canadian television series.

"The overwhelming success of Corner Gas confirms that Saskatchewan stories resonate with television viewers across Canada," SaskFilm CEO and Film Commissioner Valerie Creighton said. "With millions watching the show each week, Corner Gas is a perfect ambassador for the film and television industry in Saskatchewan."

The Writers Guild of Canada presented Corner Gas the award at their 9th annual Canadian Screenwriting Awards on April 18th. To be eligible, a film, TV or radio project must have been aired or screened between Dec. 1st, 2003 and Nov. 30th, 2004.

The Government of Saskatchewan's Film Employment Tax Credit has been a major marketing tool for attracting high-profile productions such as Corner Gas to Saskatchewan. The 35 per cent tax credit is administered by SaskFilm, who also operates the government's Canada-Saskatchewan Production Studios in Regina where Corner Gas is produced along with filming in Rouleau.
