TATAGWA VIEW TAKES PERSONAL APPROACH TO CARE

Released on June 22, 2005

The official opening of an innovative 123-bed long-term care facility, showcased building design and care that encourages residents to stay alert and involved, in a home-like environment.

Called Tatagwa View (in Cree, Tatagwa means "it is flat"), the building houses residents of the Sun Country Health Region who need on-going care. A 10-bed mental health centre, a day care centre, regional laundry facilities, rehabilitation services and health region administration offices are also located in the new building on the northwest edge of Weyburn near the former Souris Valley Regional Care Centre.

The bungalow-style facility is divided into 11 different living sections, each with common rooms for food preparation, dining and activities. The residents take part in cooking and activity planning in order to help them stay engaged and active. Pets and plants are also encouraged, further enhancing the quality of life. Each resident has a private bedroom and bathroom. An additional living section is reserved for the mental health centre.

"Isolation from everyday activities can sometimes be a problem for residents in long-term care," Health Minister John Nilson told the opening ceremony crowd. "The design and programming of Tatagwa View help improve people's quality of life. By investing in innovative long-term care facilities like this one, we are providing quality care in a quality environment."

Saskatchewan Health contributed $15 million toward the $22 million cost and the local community and health region contributed more than $7 million for equipment, furniture and construction.

"Tatagwa View is second to none in our province," Sun Country chairperson Earl Kickley said. "It is as up-to-date and modern as any facility of its kind and it will ensure that residents have a wonderful place to live, in very beautiful surroundings, for many years to come."
