PRINCE ALBERT CRIME REDUCTION STRATEGY ANNOUNCED

Released on June 20, 2005

The Prince Albert Crime Reduction Strategy was launched today to help reduce crime and enhance public safety in Prince Albert. This strategy will focus on high-risk youth and adult offenders who are involved in break and enter offences and/or violent offences.

"Keeping communities safe is a top priority of this government, and this strategy will help us to continue achieving this vitally important objective," Justice Minister Frank Quennell said. "Prince Albert residents have made it clear that they feel vulnerable to property crimes and want a solution. They have also expressed their commitment to working together to reduce the incidence of violent crimes in their city."

"Both the Departments of Corrections and Public Safety and Justice are working in partnership with the Prince Albert Police Service, RCMP, the Aboriginal community and other organizations to provide effective interventions that decrease offending," Corrections and Public Safety Minister Peter Prebble said. "This strategy will reduce crime by implementing targeted, integrated approaches and effective early interventions."

The immediate goal is to build a crime reduction strategy that will reduce the number of crimes by targeting a limited number of chronic high-risk adult and youth offenders. The crime reduction initiative will cover the city of Prince Albert and the surrounding area.

The long-term goal of the crime reduction strategy is to enhance public safety, and to prevent and reduce crime in the Prince Albert area by creating partnerships and involving the community.

The local crime reduction working group was established with representation from the Prince Albert City Police, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Mental Health Services, various Aboriginal organizations, the Crown prosecutors' office and Corrections and Public Safety. The partners involved in the strategy will continue to work together during implementation.

One adult corrections probation officer, one young offender supervisor and two-and-a-half youth worker positions will be assigned to the Prince Albert crime reduction strategy.

The provincial government now has targeted crime reduction strategies in place to address the specific needs of Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert and North Battleford.
