NEW SASKATCHEWAN SAVINGS BONDS EARN 2.5 PER CENT

Released on June 9, 2005

The interest rate for Series 14 Saskatchewan Savings Bonds (SSBs) has been set at 2.5 per cent.

The bonds are available for purchase June 10th-25th at local credit unions, chartered banks, trust companies, investment dealers and other authorized agents throughout Saskatchewan. During last year's campaign, Saskatchewan residents purchased $23 million worth of SSBs. The total amount of bonds held by people in this province is $712 million.

"Saskatchewan people value the safe, secure investment opportunity these bonds provide, and the fact that the interest paid on the bonds stays here in the province," Finance Minister Harry Van Mulligen said.

Each year, Saskatchewan Savings Bonds are available to residents of the province during a two-week window. The bonds can be purchased in denominations ranging from $100 to a maximum of $200,000. Investors also have the option of choosing an instalment purchase plan for purchases up to $2,500. A popular feature of the bonds is that they are redeemable annually, without penalty, for the full amount plus interest.

Series 9 bonds, worth $478 million, are maturing this year, with bondholders having the option of cashing in their bonds or reinvesting in Series 14. No interest is earned on Series 9 bonds after July 15th, 2005.

The interest rate for the Series 13 Bonds issued in 2004 will increase to 2.5 per cent for the year ending July 15th, 2006.

Interest rates for outstanding series for the year ending July 15th, 2006 will be:

· Series 10 (matures July 15th, 2006) – 4.25 per cent

· Series 11 (matures July 15th, 2007) – 3.25 per cent

· Series 12 (matures July 15th, 2008) – 3 per cent

· Series 13 (matures July 15th, 2009) – 2.5 per cent

Anyone with questions about any series of SSBs can call 1-800-567-7077 or e-mail saskbond@finance.gov.sk.ca. More information is also available by clicking on the Saskatchewan Savings Bond link at www.gov.sk.ca/finance. Bond application forms are available for print-off from that link. People purchasing bonds must still mail in a hard copy of their forms, with payment.
