JUNE 1ST–10TH IS NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION WEEK

In recognition of Canada's transportation industry and the continuing achievements of people who work in it, June 1st–10th has been designated as National Transportation Week.

"Because of the importance of transportation in the economic and social development of Canada and Saskatchewan, it's appropriate that we take time to honour the contributions of the industry's men and women and to reflect upon the role they have in our daily lives," Highways and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said.

"Transportation is, in fact, the primary enabler of our economy and impacts us in countless ways."

The safe and efficient movement of people, goods, and services on Saskatchewan's transportation network are of vital strategic interest at both the provincial and national level. Saskatchewan's exports account for two-thirds of its provincial GDP, and, with just three per cent of Canada's population, Saskatchewan products account for 13 per cent of the country's international marine traffic.

Recently, the Ministers responsible for transportation in the four western provinces released the Western Canada Transportation Infrastructure Strategy. The strategy addresses all four modes of transportation (air, road, rail, and marine) and identifies the priorities and actions necessary to ensure that transportation is integrated, efficient, and modernized.
