DESIGN OF NEW REGINA BUS DEPOT UNVEILED

Released on December 8, 2005

The Saskatchewan Transportation Corporation (STC) unveiled today the design of its new passenger and freight terminal and head office in downtown Regina.

"This design puts a high priority in providing bus passengers with a very pleasant and functional lobby area," Agriculture and Food Minister Mark Wartman said on behalf of Minister responsible for STC Eldon Lautermilch. "As well, the new facility will be 100 per cent accessible to persons with disabilities in the public, office, and bus lane areas. A high quality downtown bus terminal has been a priority for the Regina Members of the Legislative Assembly, and the new facility is going to give people arriving in our city a very pleasant welcome to Regina."

The new facility will allow the company to improve on the high quality service it offers Saskatchewan people and is much more practical than the current Regina terminal and offices. It will allow for greater efficiency in both passenger and freight operations, will improve interline services with other private carriers, and will provide a safe work environment for both customers and staff. The new facility is also going to exceed national standards on energy efficiency.

"The new STC facility reflects City Council's long range vision of a city that is attractive, generous, affordable, accessible, compact and competitive," Mayor Pat Fiacco said. "Creating a more competitive environment in Downtown Regina helps to attract new residents and businesses, which in turn, benefits the entire community."

The entire project - including land assembly and preparation, building, parking and fixtures and furnishings - is budgeted to cost $19 million. Saunders Evans Architects of Regina designed the facility. Plans call for tenders to be let in late winter/early spring, with a construction period of approximately 14 months after the award of a contract.
