Learning Minister Andrew Thomson will travel to Poland to participate in ceremonies marking the 60th anniversary of the Allied victory in Europe that ended the Holocaust.
"It is important to honour the memory of those who suffered and perished in the Holocaust, as well as sacrifices of so many Saskatchewan veterans who fought and died in Europe during the Second World War," Thomson said. "Today, we must continue to remain vigilant and remember the lessons of the Holocaust as we strive for a tolerant society free from discrimination and racism in all its forms."
May 7th marks the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. May 5th is Yom haShoah – Holocaust Memorial Day.
Thomson was invited to Poland by the Canadian Jewish Congress due to his work in introducing legislation that commemorates the end of the Holocaust. The Saskatchewan Legislature passed The Holocaust Memorial Day Act in 2001.
On May 5th, Thomson will participate in the March of the Living, a ceremony involving 18,000 people from all over the world. He will also tour the Warsaw Ghetto, Auschwitz and Nozyk Synagogue. Saskatchewan Party MLA Don Toth will accompany Thomson.
