SASKPOWER POSTER CONTEST HELPS STUDENTS TAKE ACTION AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE

Released on April 22, 2005

Plant trees. Use energy wisely. Help protect the earth. Think about our future. These are just some of the creative ideas generated by the winners of the SaskPower Shand Greenhouse Energy & Our Environment Poster Contest.

Announced in honour of Earth Day, this year's winning posters were created by:

• Brody Starr from Balcarres Community School;

• Elisabeth Fortier from Ecole Zenon Park School;

• Brett Westman from North West Central School in Plenty;

• Cassandra Sullivan from St. Henry's Junior Elementary School in Melville.

The Energy & Our Environment Poster Contest invites Saskatchewan grades five and six students to design posters that demonstrate how we can incorporate responsible environmental choices into our daily lives and take action against climate change.

"This poster contest is one of the ways SaskPower educates the public about the importance of environmental responsibility," Minister responsible for SaskPower Frank Quennell said. "Climate change affects all of us, and, with over 500 submissions from schools across the province, I am encouraged that so many of our province's young people are thinking about ways to address this important global issue."

A winning poster was selected from each school that entered the contest; with the top four posters selected from this smaller group. The four grand prize winners will each receive mountain bikes and bicycle helmets. Each of the top four winners' schools will receive climate change materials for the school library, and a cheque for $250 toward the purchase of trees from a local nursery to be planted on school grounds.

Prizes will be presented at the schools of the four winners before the end of the school year.
