VOLUNTARY SECTOR INITIATIVE RELEASES FRAMEWORK DOCUMENT

Released on April 18, 2005

The Premier's Voluntary Sector Initiative released A Framework for Partnership today to coincide with National Volunteer Week, April 17th-23rd.

The Premier's Volunteer Sector Initiative, which was formed in 2002, works to strengthen the relationship between the Government of Saskatchewan and the voluntary sector.

"Thousands of volunteer groups across the province contribute a great deal to our quality of life," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joan Beatty said. "The Voluntary Sector Initiative can help these groups accomplish their goals."

"The Framework for Partnership document sets out the values and principles to guide the working environment for voluntary organizations," Legislative Secretary and Chair of the Voluntary Sector Initiative Doreen Hamilton said. "This resource and the ongoing work by the Voluntary Sector Initiative committee will continue to enhance communication and support for the voluntary sector's development of policies and programs."

The framework outlines the objectives, scope, vision, values and principles of the Premier's Voluntary Sector Initiative and defines voluntary sector terms. To view the document or for more information on the Premier's Voluntary Sector Initiative, go online to www.cyr.gov.sk.ca/voluntary_sector_initiative.html

The Voluntary Sector Initiative Steering Committee is composed of representatives from 14 communities and 11 government departments. The Committee's community members are: Brenda Ahenakew, Bill Edwards, Sheri Hillestad Smith and Chris Hills, all of Saskatoon; Michelle Dezell of Pike Lake; Heather Felskie of Indian Head; Rose Gilks and Tom Myers, both of Regina; Sonya Jahn of Prince Albert; Tracey Mann of Emerald Park; Tom Seeley of Yorkton; and Erma Taylor of Lebret.

Saskatchewan has more than 12,000 non-profit organizations and 5,000 incorporated charities all driven by a vibrant volunteer community that has enriched all our lives. Saskatoon will be the site of the first annual Premier's Voluntary Sector Initiative Forum this June 10th-11th. Voluntary sector leaders and government officials will meet to exchange ideas on how to improve working relationships between government and the voluntary sector.
