The border city of Lloydminster will play host to a hockey game that's been a century in the making, pitting top junior players from Saskatchewan against their Alberta counterparts.
"In addition to sharing a centennial year, Saskatchewan and Alberta also share a reputation for developing some of the finest hockey players in all of Canada," Premier Lorne Calvert said. "I'm pleased that during our centennial year, both of our provinces will have the opportunity to showcase our talented young players and celebrate the past 100 years of our pride for the contributions we have made to hockey, considered by many to be our national sport."
About 2,700 hockey fans are expected to cheer on their favourite team. The rosters are made up of residents from each province whose Western Hockey League team has been eliminated from the playoffs. The game, which sold out in approximately one day, will be broadcast live on CBC television and radio in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Pre-game coverage begins at 6 p.m. and the opening face-off is at 7 p.m. local time. CBC radio and television will also provide on-air programming the day of the game.
"Thanks to everyone involved in this unique event that brings together centennial committees from two provinces, volunteers from the host community of Lloydminster, the Western Hockey League and the CBC," Saskatchewan Centennial 2005 Chair and Moose Jaw North MLA Glenn Hagel said. "I wish Team Saskatchewan every success in bringing the Centennial Cup back to our province, where it will find a home for the next century!"
The game will provide ongoing opportunity to support education and skills development for future hockey players. Proceeds will go toward the WHL Education Fund, the Saskatchewan Hockey Association Legacy Fund and the Hockey Alberta Foundation.
Premier Calvert and many members will attend the event. Several MLAs will board a bus outside of the Legislative Building at noon, Thursday, April 14th, to travel to the Lloydminster Centennial Civic Arena in support of Saskatchewan players.
The game is a partnership between the WHL, the CBC, the City of Lloydminster and the Saskatchewan and Alberta Centennial Committees. For further information, please visit www.sask2005.ca/hockey, or the WHL's website at www.whl.ca.
