Surfacing on the Annaheim Access Road north of Highway 5 is underway.
The 15 km Annaheim Access Road, which runs from Highway 5 to the Village of Annaheim, will be converted to a paved standard under a partnership agreement between Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation, the RM of St. Peter No. 369, the Village of Annaheim and Doepker Industries.
"The Annaheim Access is heavily used for hauling agriculture-related commodities, and by Doepker Industries for transporting materials into their plant, getting people to work and getting their finished product out," Highways and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "Paving this road will improve safety and support economic development in the region."
Over the last three years the RM of St. Peter, with funding from Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation, the Village of Annaheim and Doepker Industries, rebuilt the subgrade in preparation for surfacing. Surfacing will likely be completed by the end of October at an estimated cost of $1.85 million. Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation will contribute $1.4 million toward the cost of surfacing.
"We were pleased to enter into an agreement that allowed the province to partner with urban and rural governments as well as local industry to improve the Annaheim Access Road for the benefit of all parties involved," Sonntag said.
A cementatious material developed by Pavement Scientific International of Saskatoon will be used in the construction process. While still in the research and development stage, this innovative strengthening technology has the potential to provide the same quality and performance as conventional materials at a significantly lower cost.
Remember to slow to 60 km/h when passing through the construction Orange Zone, and watch for construction workers, signs and heavy equipment. For more information about highway construction in your area, view the provincial project map at: www.highways.gov.sk.ca.
