SCN announced today that they are now delivering televised driver training to students throughout the province via their E-Learning Network.
The course was developed through a partnership between Saskatchewan Learning, SGI, and the Saskatoon Public School Division. About 90 students are already enrolled, including First Nation, Hutterite, and home-schooled students, as well as adult learners in regional colleges. Students are participating in remote communities like Buffalo Narrows and in rural communities like Belle Plaine.
"SCN connects people right across Saskatchewan," Minister responsible for SCN Joan Beatty said. "The new driver training course is a valuable addition to the televised classes SCN delivers to over 3000 students each year in more than 200 communities. This is a great example of how our state-of-the-art technical infrastructure enhances educational opportunities for Saskatchewan people. It uses our provincial CommunityNet and E-Learning Network, keeping our people connected wherever they live."
Taught by Ken Claffey, manager of Driver Education, Saskatoon School Division, the course adheres to provincial standards and overcomes the challenge of low enrollments and limited access in remote areas. The classroom component of the course is televised, but local driving instructors will continue to teach the in-car practice component.
"We created the Interactive Televised Instruction version of the driver training course as a more efficient and cost-effective way for school divisions to ensure a higher number of students have equal access to this vital training," Learning Minister Andrew Thomson said. "Through the SCN network, students in many remote areas can now be reached simultaneously by a single instructor while still enjoying the learning benefits of interacting directly with each other and their teacher."
On behalf of Saskatchewan Learning, SCN delivers televised secondary and post-secondary classes to over 230 schools and regional colleges in more than 200 communities, enhancing educational opportunities available to people in remote areas.
